Island View Elementary PTA

October 2022 Newsletter

Principal's Message

Island View Families:

Fall is undoubtedly my favorite season. School resumes. Pumpkin art adorns windows and hallways. A brisk hint of autumn fills the air. The tree outside my office begins its perennial color change to red and orange. And most important—our students feel reenergized as routines return to our lives.

Still, I must acknowledge that the start of school this year has been difficult for some students and families. We are reentering “normal” school life after a disruptive pandemic, and anxiety is high amongst many. Please reach out to me if your student needs any support with the transition back to school.

October is always a busy month. Students take the Measure of Annual Progress (MAP test), a district-sponsored assessment that helps us better support student learning needs. We also welcome families to Island View for fall conferences on October 19-21. Please look for a sign-up link in the coming weeks.

Last Friday, our incomparable PTA welcomed students and families back to the Island View theater for a movie night. It was the first such event in almost three years, and we finally got to use the new ceiling-mounted projector and sound system that the PTA purchased for students pre-COVID. It was an amazing evening that filled me with emotion and gratitude. I feel blessed to be part of your students’ lives. Thank you, Island View PTA for all your efforts—past and present.

As always, please reach out to me at bhanrahan@asd103.org or at 360-503-1490 with your questions, concerns, and suggestions.

Happy Fall-
Brian Hanrahan

Hospitality update – Donations for Teachers (Parent Teacher Conference Week) October 18-21

At the end of August, Hospitality welcomed back our fabulous staff at their all staff meeting and treated them with yummy food and treats! Thanks to Kristen Lamb, Amber Fry and of course our wonderful PTA for providing the funding.

We are also looking to spoil them in October to help with the week put forth for conferences! Let's stock the lounge and help fuel them through the afternoons and evening! If you'd like to help, please check out the sign-up genius below! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D44AEAD2DA3F58-stock1

Scholastic Book Fair

The Scholastic Book Fair is back at Island View and we really need some volunteers to help set up and facilitate this week-long event for our kids! All proceeds go to the school library to increase the catalog of new and exciting books for our Eagles.

October 7, 2022 (Friday), is when a lot of the initial set up of books will take place. We need some volunteers to assist with setting up the Book Fair in the IVE library.

October 10-14, 2022 (Monday through Friday), is when the actual Book Fair will take place. Students will have the ability to walk around, look at the different books for sale and buy some as well! To keep things flowing smoothly we need some volunteers to help keep order, keep books restocked, and assist with fund transactions.

The kids will be able to browse the book fair at recess (if they have cash or an e-wallet), as well as 30 minutes before school and after school (but during these times, they need a parent or guardian accompanying them).

Parents can shop at the Book Fair all day long but must 1) check in at the front office and 2) have filled the volunteer form (see below link).

If you are interested in volunteering, please see the sign-up genius below: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0f4daca928abfe3-island

Contact Ms. Davis if you have any questions by emailing hdavis@asd103.org.

Note: If you'd like to help with fun events at the school, please complete the Anacortes School District Volunteer Application to become an approved volunteer for the district. It's free and only takes a few minutes to fill out!

Thank you in advance for putting your support behind this awesome event.

Trunk or Treat for Halloween is Back! Sat, October 29th, 4-6pm

Mark your calendars for the second annual all-district Trunk or Treat Saturday, October 29th from 4-6 PM!

Fidalgo, Mt. Erie and Island View PTAs are partnering once again to offer this popular event. Students wear their Halloween costumes and trick or treat from the trunks in the upper Anacortes High School parking lot. The three elementary schools are battling it out for the best trunk and the top three trunks will receive some amazing prizes.

WE NEED YOU! We need families willing to hand out candy from their car/van/trucks (we call this the trunk) AND we need large Costco-sized bag candy donations.

We would love to be one of the select "Trunks!"

We can help with candy donation!

Island View and Mt. Erie Elementary Schools "Walk and Wheel" Event. Wed, October 12, 8:15am

IVE and Mt. Erie students (and we'd love to have the parents walk or ride with us):

Wednesday, October 12, 2022 from 8:15ish (feel free to come and gather at Storvik Park a little early). We will begin the group walk/ride at 8:30.

What: This Walk and Wheel Event is part of the Safe Routes program that IVE PTA coordinates. This is aimed at building community and morale. We are collaborating with Mt. Erie's PTA to do a joint event to have both schools participate by walking or riding to school on the same day (last spring's event was a blast!).

To help keep our walkers and riders safe, the Anacortes Police Department will provide road crossing assistance at 29th Street and M Ave (Island View), and at 32nd Street and M Ave (Mt. Erie) on Wednesday, October 12 from 8:30 and 9am.

Fingers crossed for good weather!

Island View will gather at the north end of Storvik Park (closer to the Splash Pad) and Mt. Erie will gather at the southern end of Storvik Park (closer to the softball fields).

We may even do a friendly competition between the schools (for bragging rights only!) to see which school has the most participants!
