Island View Elementary PTA

November 2022 Newsletter

Principal's Message

Island View Families:

Our school community has experienced several exciting events at the end of October—chocolate sales fun, an ice cream truck, "trunk or treat," and a Halloween parade. I would like to thank our amazing PTA for creating all these experiences for our kids.

Later this month, our efforts will turn more serious as we celebrate Veterans Day with a school-wide community service project and an assembly that invites active-duty and veteran family members to join our celebration. Please look for more information later in this PTA newsletter.

While I practice grateful living every day, as we move toward Thanksgiving, I find myself even more focused on gratitude. Your students make me smile and laugh every day. They also boost my confidence—sometimes in ways I don't deserve. For instance, when the ice cream truck visited Island View to celebrate our successful chocolate sales, one little guy who was enjoying a cotton candy popsicle said to me, "Mr. Hanrahan, you made this taste exactly like cotton candy!" 😊

While I cannot take credit for the taste of the student's treat, I am here to help you with any questions or concerns you have. Please contact me at 360-503-1490 or at

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday making memories with your family and friends.
Brian Hanrahan

Family Fun Night – make holiday gifts!

Wed, November 16, 5:30-7:00 pm

Is anyone thinking about holiday gifts yet?

November's Family Fun Night is a great opportunity to help your kiddos create some unique presents for friends and family for a low cost (between $10-$15 per gift).

Kids can create original artwork on a blank template during family fun night which will be transposed onto super durable plates, placemats or tumblers. After our Eagles design their creation, the PTA will collect the designs and send a consolidated order in. You can order as many products as you want from the same artwork. In 2-4 weeks, the items should arrive and will be distributed for gift giving.

Note: If you can't make the family fun night event but want to have your kiddo make a plate, we've got you covered. We have a folder outside the PTA office with plate templates. Grab one and create at home. These must be turned in to the PTA no later than November 16, 2022.

We want everyone to have the opportunity to participate, if they wish. If you need financial assistance, please contact a PTA member. If you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out! Please email at

Gratitude Project – an all school Gratitude Tree

Nov 1-15, art will be up by Nov 20

This year, the PTA is coordinating a fall Gratitude project. On November 1st, the PTA sent a leaf to each student and asked every Eagle to tell us (or draw) what they were grateful for. We asked them to decorate their leaf and send it back to the PTA so we could display their answers.

Many students did this project at school and have returned their leaves. If you have an Eagle that brought home a leaf, please consider encouraging them to think about what they are most grateful for, decorating the leaf and sending it back to school.

Shortly after the 15th, the PTA will use our Eagle art to design a cool tree to highlight what we are grateful for.

If you have ideas on other gratitude projects, please consider joining the Gratitude Project initiative.

Hospitality update

Stock the Staff Lounge

A BIG THANK-YOU to all who helped Stock the lounge. We had granola bars, popcorn, seltzer water, muffins and much, much more. The fresh fruit and treats on the tables seemed to be a big hit. Your time and generosity is always appreciated.

Parent/Teacher Conference Meal

Hospitality and the PTA fed our teachers and staff who were working late for the October evening conferences. The wonderful smells from the slow cookers filled the halls and were thoroughly enjoyed by the staff.

Parent/Teacher Conference Meal, Great Food

A SPECIAL THANK-YOU to Nicole Johntson, Stephanie Downey, Jenny Aitkens, Kristen Lamb and Amber Fry for preparing, setting up, and cleaning up this fun hospitality event.
