Island View Elementary PTA

September 2020 Newsletter

On behalf of the entire school community, the Island View PTA would like to say a huge THANK YOU to the ASD administration, staff, and our beloved teachers! During a global pandemic, you are working so hard to make this year as “normal” and wonderful for your students as you possibly can. You are adapting new curriculum, learning multiple platforms, and revising instruction to work in a virtual world. You are leaning into equity work with open hearts and minds ready to dive deep into long overdue conversations. You are prioritizing social and emotional learning which will help your students, and indeed the world, heal from this global trauma. You are doing everything you can to figure out how to build relationships and love your students the moment they “walk into your room.” Educators are truly Essential Workers and are the key to the entire economy. You are showing the world and your students what resilience really is. You are so very very appreciated and we are deeply honored that you do all you do for our children! THANK YOU!

Principal's Message

Dear Island View Families:

While our summer break was filled with more challenges and anxiety than usual, I hope you found opportunities to rest and make meaningful memories with family and friends. Even during a pandemic, each day you have with your student is a gift to be cherished. My wife and I recently took our oldest son (an Island View alum😊) to college, and I have to say memories and images of his elementary years have flooded my mind ever since. Savor this time and these waning summer days. They are truly special.

Anacortes district staff have worked hard this summer to create relevant and rich learning experiences for your students. But as you know, that is a challenging endeavor when classroom experiences are remote. While there is no way we can duplicate the joy and beauty of in-person learning, I still find validation and hope in our current reality. Validation because I better understand and appreciate the power of our school community. I miss you and your kids immensely, and I’ve heard from many of you that your kids miss their friends and teachers. All these feelings underscore how valuable we are to one another.

I feel hope because our beautiful school community might be different, but it is still intact. I recently spoke to a mom of an incoming kindergarten student who also has an older sibling at Island View. She told me, “My son has watched his sister at school, and he wants to do all the same things she got to do.” This conversation caught my attention and leads to this commitment: The Island View staff will find ways to support and engage your students in ways that make school feel “normal.”

To close, I want to thank you for the patience and grace you have shown the school district during these challenging times. In the coming weeks, I will send information on our virtual “meet and greet” and other back-to-school activities. As always, please contact me at or at 360-503-1490 if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.

Welcome Back to School!

While we may not be able to be together in person, we are still Proud, Soarin' Island View Eagles, and we can't wait to see your beautiful faces again, even if only through a screen.

Show your school spirit from home! Each student will receive a page to color and put up in their window for all to see! Then you can send a picture of your Eagle with their sign, or any signs you spot in town, to and we will share them on Facebook.

We miss you and can't wait to "see" you soon!

N-O-W is the time to JOIN PTA!

Support Island View students & staff by joining the PTA!

First, we'd like to THANK all those who supported the Island View PTA last year. We are deeply committed to the staff and students at Island View Elementary and we could not provide the MANY opportunities we offer without your support!

Due to the pandemic, our reach this year will be limited and we have gutted the budget, but we are still determined to fund staff needs during online learning and we can't wait to host in-person fun just as soon as it is safe.

By law we must have at least 25 members to remain an active PTA. Our meetings will only occur when necessary and will take place online. Won't you please JOIN our Island View PTA family today?

Our major Color Run fundraiser last spring was cancelled due to Covid-19. We know that times are tough for many, so we are NOT planning another major fundraiser until we are safely back at school.

If you are able, please consider donating to the Island View PTA so that we can continue to support the Island View staff and students as much as possible. Thank you!!

You can also help by selecting Island View PTA as your charity of choice in Amazon Smile! Once you have it set up, you just shop as you normally would, and Amazon will automatically donate .05% of your purchase total to us! Super easy and it means a world of difference to our staff & students! Thank you for your support!

Every year the Anacortes Schools Foundation and Shell Puget Sound Refinery partner up and host the Shell Fueling Education Fun Run, and though the race is going virtual this year, the Anacortes School District Grant Competition is back! The school with the highest percentage of their staff and student body that participate in this race will receive $5,000 to benefit that school. All ASD students, teachers, and administrative staff are eligible to participate and all you have to do is to select the ASD school where you work or which school your children attend when you register. The winning school will be determined by Anacortes Schools Foundation in consult with the ASD Superintendent and announced via social media in October, so stay tuned!

In addition to the ASD Grant Competition, all registrants will be entered to win one of three amazing participation prizes and will have the opportunity to enter any of the weekly Photo Challenges! All proceeds from registration, sponsorship, and donations will help support COVID-19 related needs for Anacortes students this school year, so tell your family and friends too! #ShellFunRun2020

Register at Open Registration will be available August 25-September 30. Register and then run or walk 2+ miles ANYWHERE, ANY TIME during the month of September!
