Principal's Message

Island View Families:

Recently, I watched a staff member take a picture of a vibrant bunch of crocuses blooming in front of the school. It was a chilly 36 degrees that sunny morning, and I imagined the staff member was trying to capture a moment of impending spring. And it has arrived; indeed, spring break is around the corner – and then it’s a fast-paced race to the end of the school year. Hang on for the ride.😊

During March we celebrated “I Love to Read Month” in super fun ways. Camp Read-a-Lot family fun night, “I Got Caught Reading” prize drawings, and “Drop-Everything-and-Read” events during the school day all contributed to the excitement and expectation that reading is a positive and productive life-long habit. I would like to thank the PTA and Ms. Hannah Davis (our librarian) for their vision and hard work to highlight the importance of reading.

After we return from spring break, we turn our attention to state assessments for our intermediate students, grades 3-5. Please anticipate specific information from your students’ teachers. Thankfully, the state has streamlined and shortened testing requirements in the wake of COVID closures and complications. I personally believe these changes are good for our students. While we need assessment data to help us improve student support systems, kids need to work, learn, and play at school. I appreciate the balance.

In closing, I’d like to return to the spring flowers in front of our school. As I walk into the building each morning and see colorful growth, I think of your students. I am amazed by their changes this year—physically, emotionally, and academically. It is a joy to be part of a school community where kids thrive and grow.

As always, please contact me with your questions, concerns, and suggestions:
bhanrahan@asd103.org or at 360-503-1490.

Brian Hanrahan

Morning Reading & Math Assistance

Island View has kicked off an initiative for early morning reading and math assistance for our students. Currently, the program has seven volunteers matched with students that need support.

Morning Reading & Math Assistance

There is still a student need for assistance, but additional volunteers are needed to expand the program. Volunteers will work with students in grades K-5 on reading or math (depending on what the student needs support in, but right now the skill in greater demand is reading support).

Details / Volunteering time requirements:

Time: 8:30 - 9:05 (not every day; volunteers work this out with Ms. Frost)
Where: ISV Library
Who: K-5 students
What: Reading or Math Support
Contact: Monica Frost at mfrost@asd103.org

If interested, please reach out to Ms. Frost and let her know what age/grade level child you would prefer to work with, a subject preference, and a preferred day of the week.

Island View Garden

On Saturday, March 18, about 20-30 Island View students, parents and staff showed up to prepare the school garden for the planting season.

Island View PTA Needs You

Weeds were pulled, grass was cut, plants were pruned.

Island View PTA Needs You

The garden beds were prepped with compost and students already planted potatoes to get the season started!

Island View PTA Needs You

Teachers will have an opportunity to take their classes to the garden to plant more things as the weather warms up.

Island View PTA Needs You

We will need volunteers during the summer to water the garden so be on the lookout for a sign up genius before school ends.

Bike/Helmet Safety Event

Wed, April 19 at 8:30am

On Wednesday April 19, the Safe Routes to School and Island View Elementary will be doing a bicycle and helmet safety event. It is open to all ISV students and it starts at 8:30 at Island View. There will be bike mechanics set up to inspect and adjust/repair student's bikes. Members of the fire department will be on hand for helmet fittings and will have helmets for kids that don't have any or need a new one. We will need 3-4 more volunteers for this event. If you are interested in volunteering, please email William Zottneck at wzottneck@asd103.org or Teresa Syms at president@islandviewpta.org.

Bike Safety + Walk and Wheels Events

Walk & Wheels Event

Wed, May 3 at 8:15am

Following the Bike and Helmet Safety event, May 3 will be our Spring Walk & Wheels event. Bring your bike, scooter, or walking shoes and meet at Storvik Park at 8:15am. Parents are encouraged to walk or ride as well! Island View families will meet on the north side of the park (Mt. Erie families will be on the south side). We will make our way to Island View starting at 8:30. There will be a police escort to cross M Avenue. Stay tuned because we may have some goodies to hand out for those that participate once the students get to school.

Box Tops Program

Every bit helps and with losing the AmazonSmile funding stream (it was sunsetted by Amazon on Feb 20, 2023), your participation in the Box Top program is even more important.

Island View PTA Needs You

Box Tops is an easy way to support Island View; the school can earn up to $1,000 a year when you earn box top credits (10 cents per box top). You can do this by scanning your paper and digital receipts using the Box Tops for Education app within 14 days of eligible purchases. If you’re buying things like fruit snacks, granola bars, certain cereals, cookie dough or pie crusts, and even cleaning supplies – you could be earning money for Island View. Why not get credit for the stuff you were going to buy anyway?

NOTE: Use this referral code A3N53R18 when you sign up and you’ll get 25 Bonus Box Tops ($2.50 value) when you scan your first receipt now through 05/31/2023, while supplies last!

Download the Box Tops for Education app through the link below:

DOWNLOAD THE APP

If you don’t want to scan your receipt, the PTA has you covered. Just drop off receipts at the PTA mailbox in the front office within 14 days of the purchase and we’ll do the rest.

Talent Show 2023 - Volunteers Needed

Island View’s annual talent show is back!

It will take place Thursday, June 8, 2023. Eagles had to submit their permission slips by March 24th and auditions will be taking place after students come back from Spring Break. After acts are chosen for the talent show, our Eagles will be able to practice and perfect their acts in the Theater during lunch periods.

Mr. Vecchione is seeking volunteer assistance during rehearsals and for the day of the performances (there will be two – Kinder - 2nd and 3rd - 5th). On the day of the performance, parents would assist with functions like backstage crowd control, assistance transitioning between acts, and DJing. In general, it is anticipated that parents will be allowed to attend one of the two performances.

Additional information will be released closer to the event. To volunteer to help with the talent show, you must be cleared to volunteer by the District (it’s an easy form to fill out) and can be done by clicking on this link: https://apps.raptortech.com/Apply/NDU4OmVuLVVT

If you’d like to volunteer, please contact Karen at vicepresident@islandviewpta.org.

Island View 2023 Field Day - Volunteers Needed

Island View is holding its annual Field Day event on Thursday, June 15, 2023 (yep, the second to last day of school) from about 1:30 pm to 3:15 pm.

More details will be passed closer to the event date but the PTA is seeking volunteers for prep work before field day and then the day of.

2023 Field Day Event

If you are available to help make and distribute popcorn, have a knack at snow cone making, have awesome skills at face painting, or have a passion for DJing – we need YOU!!

To volunteer for field day, you must be cleared to volunteer by the District (it’s an easy form to fill out) and can be done by clicking on this link: https://apps.raptortech.com/Apply/NDU4OmVuLVVT

Island View 2023 Field Day - Fifth Grader Shirts (*action needed)

Fifth Grade Families only - Historically, fifth graders help run the show for field day as a milestone acknowledging their impending graduation. The PTA is working on ordering shirts for the fifth graders that have the Island View Eagle on the front and the names of the graduating class on the back. The PTA is also partially subsidizing the shirt so the cost to parents is $8 (youth sizes) and $10 (adult sizes). In order to get these shirts on time, we need to place the order by 15 April.

You can order and pay online (credit/debit card or cash/check), through the link below.

ORDER SHIRT HERE

Alternatively, fill out the bottom of the form that came home with your fifth grader and send cash or a check made out to “Island View PTA” in an envelope.

Payment is due no later than April 15, 2023 (sooner would be better).

Island View 2022-2023 Yearbook

The PTA is diligently working on the 2022-2023 yearbook. Our Eagles have made a big impact already by choosing the yearbook covers (front and back). All other cover submissions will be featured in some way throughout the yearbook. This year, Island View PTA is using Treering as the yearbook platform. Softcover yearbooks will cost $19.00 and Hardcover will cost about $25.00. If you would like to purchase a yearbook, please do so by going to this link:

ORDER YEARBOOK HERE

Parents, here’s how you can help now: If you’ve snapped a great picture of your Island View student participating in a school event (the play, at a field trip, while you were volunteering in the classroom), please share it with us! It is never too early to start sending the PTA pictures of your eagle so we can make sure we are able to get everyone in the yearbook. Images can be sent to yearbook@islandviewpta.org.

Earth Day Clean Up Event

Saturday, April 22, 2023 - 10:30 to noonish

What better way to celebrate Earth Day than to give some TLC to Island View. Participants will meet up at the front of the school and will do debris pick up, light pruning, raking, and general upkeep for the school.

Earth Day Clean Up Event Flyer

If we have enough volunteers we will go around the school to clean up our kids playgrounds. We have gloves and garbage bags, but would appreciate it if volunteers could bring their own work gloves, rakes, and pruning shears if they have them. Snacks will be provided at this event.

Spirit Week and Be the Change Recap

Based on the creatively put together outfits and overall participation, I think we can call this year’s spirit week a success.

Spirit Week School Rainbow

The change drive was also a success, raising $600! The overwhelming vote from the classes was to donate the money to the Humane Society of Skagit County.

Earth Day Clean Up Event Flyer

Mr. Hanrahan, PTA representatives, and some students were able to make a special trip out there to visit with the animals at the shelter and personally deliver the school's donation. It was great to see the impact our change drive will be able to make!

Earth Day Clean Up Event Flyer

Special thanks to everyone who helped out and made spirit week possible! Also, a special thank you to Pet Place Market for their donation of dog food and toys for the Humane Society, and Mr. Hanrahan, teachers, and staff for their support of the change drive and daily themed participation (which the students loved to see!).

I Love to Read Month Recap

Camp Read-a-Lot Family Fun Night was a blast!

Our kiddos read by flash lights in tents, picked up some great books at the book swap, ran a tent maze, went fishing, tossed marshmallows, and sang along to campfire songs! It was amazing!!
